Carthage switchgrass is a native, perennial, warm-season bunchgrass that grows 4–5 feet tall. It has round stems and produces a many-branched, open, 6‒18 inch indeterminate inflorescence. It spreads by seed or by short rhizomes up to 0.5 inches long. It produces an average of 134 stems/ft2 with stems measuring 0.12 inches in diameter on average.
